FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF CARROLLTON, OHIO
Welcome to the Carrollton First United Methodist Church website. Our message here is simply another way of reaching out to deliver the gospel of Jesus Christ. We hope you will find the information helpful, inspiring and perhaps, even motivating.
Our church is a medium-sized church, in a small town, but our hearts are big on God. We are a family. The atmosphere here is not high pressure, although you will likely be welcomed with a kind word or two. It is comfortable and inviting, where we share laughter and tears, joy and sorrow, good times and bad. But most of all we share Jesus. It’s a place where you will find worship and music, scripture and fellowship, profound messages and a deep reverence for God.
Anyone, anytime is welcome in our family. So please, drop by on Sunday morning for worship at 8:15 or 10:45 and share with us the awesomeness of God.
OUR HISTORY
In 1816, a dozen Wesleyites met at the log home of Alexander Leslie at 43 East Main Street, now the Free Press Standard, and organized the Methodist Episcopal Church of Centreville, Columbiana County, Ohio. Meetings were held in the homes of the members from time to time when the “circuit rider” could come with saddlebags, bible and hymnbook.
In 1820, a two-story log meeting house was built at 209 West Main Street. The upper floor was a church and the lower floor a school. In 1841, the log church and school was demolished and a one-story brick church was built which served until a two-story brick church at the same location replaced it in 1853. This church was rebuilt in 1871.
The present church at 253 South Lisbon Street was completed in September 1900. Four new Sunday school rooms and a church parlor were added to the East side of the church in 1927. In 1969, the sanctuary was restructured, new pews and carpet added, the kitchen modernized, new entrances and steps to the basement and four new Sunday school rooms were added.
From 1848 to 1868, the parsonage was located at 219 Second Street S.W. From 1882 until 1913, the parsonage was located at 451 West Main Street. In early 1913, the present parsonage was built at 251 South Lisbon Street.
UNITED METHODISTS
As United Methodists, we have an obligation to bear a faithful Christian witness to Jesus Christ, the living reality at the center of the Church’s life and witness. To fulfill this obligation, we reflect critically on our biblical and theological inheritance, striving to express faithfully the witness we make in our own time.
Two considerations are central to this endeavor: the sources from which we derive our theological affirmations and the criteria by which we assess the adequacy of our understanding and witness.
Wesley believed that the living core of the Christian faith was revealed in Scripture, illumined by tradition, vivified in personal experience, and confirmed by reason.
